We stayed in the Grand Budapest in Upper Nebelsbad in the Republic of Zubrowka at the end of June whilst on a business trip to Lutz. Luckily the communist days are over and the hotel is under new management of the Historic Society of Zubrowka, for which we did some research in the Mueum of Lutz (which reminded us a bit of the Dresden Zwinger in nearby Germany).

In Wes Anderson's latest film, The Grand Budapest Hotel, a writer relates the long and twisting life story of a hotel owner. It's about youthful love and lifelong obsession, and while the story is The Grand Budapest Hotel is the filmic equivalent of one of the elaborate, multi-layered cream cakes that its young female lead, pastry chef Agatha (Saoirse Ronan), spends so long confecting. The film tells the story of Zero Moustafa (Tony Revoli), a lobby boy at the illustrious Grand Budapest Hotel in the fictional kingdom of Zubrowka between the wars.

When asked why he decided to film The Grand Budapest Hotel mostly in Görlitz, Anderson admitted that even though the generous tax incentive in Germany and the talented local crews were big draws, they weren’t the major factors.
